Programme Title: Business Innovation in Singapore and Asia
Type: Short-Term Academic Programme (4 sessions, 3 hours each)

This programme serves as the academic component of a broader programme organised by SSC Tours and Travel, designed to introduce students to Singapore’s position as a gateway to Asia and a hub for business innovation. Combining contextual insights with practical frameworks, the programme equips students with tools to evaluate and develop business models. Working in teams, students will analyse selected companies using the Business Model Canvas and present their insights.

By the end of the programme, students will be able to:

1. Understand Singapore’s role as a business and innovation hub in Asia.
2. Identify key drivers of business success in the region.
3. Apply the Business Model Canvas to develop and communicate business ideas.
4. Enhance their skills in presentation, storytelling, and pitching.
5. Work collaboratively on a project and present their ideas confidently to an audience.

 

Topic 1: Introduction to Singapore and the Business Opportunities as a Gateway to Asia This session provides an overview of Singapore’s role as a strategic node in global business. Students will explore the country’s economic structure, pro-business policies, innovation ecosystem, and regional connectivity. The discussion will also cover emerging sectors and opportunities in Southeast Asia, offering context for the group projects to follow.

Topic 2: Business Model Canvas and Project Briefing Students will be introduced to the Business Model Canvas (BMC), a practical tool for analysing and designing business models. The components of the BMC will be explained using real-life examples. Students will then be assigned selected companies to analyse using the BMC framework. Teams will begin their collaborative work during this session, guided by a project brief.

Topic 3: Presentation, Pitching, and Storytelling In this session, students will learn how to communicate their ideas effectively. They will be introduced to the fundamentals of storytelling for business, how to structure a compelling pitch, and best practices for engaging presentations. Emphasis will be placed on clarity, confidence, and creativity in delivery, with examples from startup pitches and business presentations.

Topic 4: Project Presentations and Certificate Presentation Student teams will present their Business Model Canvas analysis of the assigned companies, applying both their strategic insights and communication skills. The programme will the awarding of certificates of participation.

• Frequency: 1 during Summer and 1 during Winter
• Duration of the Programme: 8 Days 7 Nights
• Age range: 14-20
• Topic of Focus: Business & Entrepreneurship (e.g. Legacy Leaders Lab)
•  SMU Course/Workshops (AM) and packed-activities (PM)
• Invitation of guests speakers from related industries (e.g. Grab, Shopee, Bloomberg, etc.)
• Group projects and presentations with prize giving
• Winning team will receive letter of commendation from SMU, specially signed by SMU’s Senior Professor
• All students will receive letter of participation
